A couple, Simon Udeani and his wife Dorcas are now facing criminal charges over an alleged land fraud.

The couple were arraigned before Justice M.G. Umar of the Federal High Court sitting in Enugu on a three-count charge relating to falsely obtaining the sum of N2,750,000 from one Onugwu Angela Chinyere on the pretense of selling a piece of land to her.

While the accused have been granted bail in the sum of N5 million and one surety in the like sum, the case was adjourned till 6th of February 2024.

This has been a common criminal occurrence in most places in the south-eastern part of Nigeria and the Enugu metropolis in particular that really calls for utmost caution from potential land buyers. It is not uncommon sighting such caveat emptor as messages of warning on properties all over the region.

This goes on to unveil that fraudulent practices of such nature thrive because a good number of the unsuspecting victims contract such transactions with unofficial entities. A barrage of unidentifiable persons in recent times parade the cities as land agents and could commit crimes and dissolve into thin air.

While the hope is high that justice would be served in the above case, investors in landed properties are advised to make adequate enquiries about properties and go through relevant authorities such as the Ministry of Lands, before parting with their hard earned monies.
